I have visited Malia and Hersonissos many times since 1989. I
have witnessed the important steps that have been done for the tourism
development of Hersonissos Municipality.
The public infrastructure is efficient and has the necessary standards in order to cover the needs of every guest.
The only thing that disturbed me was the bad condition of the
small Church "Afentis Christos" Jesus Christ in Malia. It is a
beautiful landmark on a rockisland opposite Malia Beach. In 2009, I swam
to the rockisland with many tourists. This church is like a wreck.
There is not a door, there are not holly icons and all the things that
describe a building as a church are missing. Some tourists who saw it,
made negative comments. Since Malia is a well known European Tourism
Destination, we have to try and improve everything we can for a better
I don't know who is responsible for this: Hersonissos
Municipality or The Archdiocese of Crete. Anyway, the church has to be
repaired and renovated. A yard can be built. A wooden path can also
connect the beach with the rockisland. This will replace the negative
impressions of thousands of tourists who visit Malia Beach and see the
rockisland with the Church Jesus Christ.
